During the 16th century, the Portuguese navigated the Spice Route bordering the African continent to the south to reach Java. Later, the Spanish would do the same, crossing the Pacific Ocean through Polynesia until they reached the Spice Islands. Thus arises an intensive trade in spices with a high economic value, highly coveted by kings and princes from all over the world. Spices such as cloves, cinnamon, nutmeg and pepper became currency and one of the most coveted ingredients on European tables. The Canary Islands, a transit area for all commercial routes at the time, also benefited from the trade in spices, which were not only used for cooking. Also, due to their therapeutic properties, they were infused and macerated in hydroalcoholic bases, generally rum, the most widespread and consumed beverage at that time. Spirit drink based on aged rums, sugar cane, citrus fruits, spices and coffee, with a friendly and comforting character. With subtle notes of fresh coffee beans on a background of orange peel and fresh spices, with a cinnamon finish.
After the conquest of the Canary Islands, extensive cultivation of citrus fruits, coffee, sugar cane and various types of spices, including cinnamon, were developed.
In 1740, the English admiral Edward Vernon, nicknamed Old Grog, ordered his troops to mix rum with water and add citrus and sugar. Thus, he managed to impose an energy drink on the entire English navy that kept the morale of the troops high by avoiding drunkenness, avoiding dehydration due to lack of drinking water on long voyages and preventing scurvy in the crew due to lack of vitamin C.
Based on this historic drink, we've crafted this unique elixir that takes its cue from an ancient island custom of burning grog. A few coffee beans and a cinnamon stick were added to this particular Quemadillo de Ron, the purpose of which was to keep awake and warm the individual who, during the night, watched from his guard post to warn of the attacks of corsairs and pirates that they approached the coast.

Why Humboldt? Bodegas Insulares Tenerife, has bottled sweet wines under this brand made with grapes from the Tacoronte-Acentejo region that stand out for their uniqueness and quality, being a benchmark within Canarian wines. This wine is also inspired by the figure of the distinguished scientist Alejandro de Humboldt who was on the island of Tenerife and said he had not seen in all his travels "such a varied, attractive and harmonious picture".
Elaboration: It is a sweet liqueur wine. When the fermentation reaches 8 natural degrees, the wine brandy is added. The fermentation time is 15 days and the fermentation temperature is between 25 and 28ºC.
Aging: 15 years in American oak barrels.

Tasting notes: High layer red wine. The red color predominates with shades of tile (tejada).
